Our Journey and Values

CastleCrew was officially established in 2020, marking the beginning of a new chapter for Matthew Oaten and Melanie McMahon as we blended our young families together and our professional expertise. The journey has been an exhilarating roller coaster, filled with challenges and rewards, all of which have strengthened our passion to continue being the best building team.


Our values are honesty, transparency, and excellence in delivery. We enjoy working closely with our clients, offering expert advice and support every step of the way, remaining flexible and ensuring a stress-free experience from start to finish.

Meet Matthew Oaten: Builder and Visionary

Matt Oaten, the builder and owner of CastleCrew, brings over two decades of experience in the construction industry. His journey began in his 20s as a carpenter, working alongside some of Sydney’s most prestigious builders on iconic homes and commercial projects, including those owned by Sydney’s celebrity figures.

In his early 30s, Matt completed his builder licence and has since been accumulating a wealth of knowledge and experience that he brings to his own company. In the first meeting you will easily understand Matt has high technical expertise, attention to detail, and his ability to lead a remarkable crew.

Leadership and Vision

Together with Mel, who brings over a decade of experience in Human Resources, Logistics and Operations across various sectors, they form a formidable leadership team. Mel ensures that the business runs smoothly, and that the client experience remains transparent, timely, and exceptional.

Local Expertise and Community

Being located in Port Macquarie, we understand the local community and its unique characteristics. Our team, including our employees and subcontractors, are all local to the area, ensuring that we are accessible and efficient in delivering our projects.


We have built long-term relationships with trusted suppliers and tradespeople, all of whom play a vital role in our larger team. This network of professionals ensures that every project we undertake is completed to the highest standard.

Reminiscing back to when Mel enjoyed her hockey days, 1st Grade in high school. We are thrilled to support this volunteer run regional sporting organisation for the local community and the local clubs they help facilitate and call their “Home Ground.”

(Who knows, the Port Macquarie life might have Mel playing on the field again soon with the kids cheering her on!)

A not-for-profit organization providing support and employment opportunities for local school students in their final senior years of high school and connecting them with local businesses in the area of trade they are currently studying.

CastleCrew are providing positions for their work placement program and assisting local students who are studying and looking to have a future career in the building industry!
